Tip of the Month Recipient | The Schmiesing Family

All tips given the month of June will be donated to the Krystal Schmiesing family of Minster. Krystal is 43 years old, married to Rob, and their children are Mary, Meghan, Eddie, and Chastity. Krystal had to give up her babysitting career when she received a cancer diagnosis. Rob works at Dannon and local bars to provide finances for their family.

In the summer of 2024 Krystal had a hard time breathing out of one side of her nose and thought she had a bad sinus infection. After being referred to an ENT doctor, they scoped her nasal cavity expecting to see polyps, but found two masses full of blood. One was able to be extracted and tested at Cleveland Clinic which tested positive for cancer. The other mass was close to the skull and had to be surgically removed. Krystal returned home in August 2024 and went back and forth to Troy for radiation five times a week from October through December. In January 2025 Krystal’s nasal plate was damaged from the radiation and it became infected and traveled into her brain. She was put on antibiotics and had surgery to remove the infection. It was drained in mid-January and a new nasal plate was grafted from her leg muscle. She was sent to a nursing home to recover and given the strongest oral antibacterial pills available through the end of April. The end of this June she is expected to have another brain surgery where they will add in a 3-D printed partial skull replacement. Once Krystal heals from this surgery, the hope is to be fully healed from the nasal cavity cancer.
