Tip of the Month Recipient | The Smith Family

All tips given the month of July will be donated to the Mary Smith family of New Bremen. Mary is 45 years old and married to her husband Todd. Together they have three daughters Piper 15, Brylin 13, and Aspen 10.

Mary is a US Postal carrier and as she was delivering mail on Friday, December 30, 2022, she started to feel unusually tired and weak. She had the flu the week before and attributed it to that. She finished working and then rested at home. The next day she had double vision and on Sunday she had lost her ability to grip, and her balance was gone. Her husband took her to the ER where they told her it was viral and dismissed her. By Monday she was no longer able to stand or walk without assistance. Her husband took her back to the ER, where they told her she had meningitis and dismissed her. On Tuesday morning she was almost “paralyzed” so her husband took her to a different ER to get a new “set of eyes.” There she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome and was transferred by squad to Miami Valley Hospital, where she was an inpatient for 8 days and then transferred to the Upper Miami Valley inpatient rehab facility as an inpatient for 6 weeks.

Mary currently receives therapy 4 times a week in the hope of regaining her strength and mobility. She cannot get up by herself yet, but can walk with a walker and some assistance. Mary will be receiving therapy and treatment for at least a year, and although her progress and recovery are slower than the doctors would like, they are hopeful she can make at least a 90% recovery. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is an auto immune disease and has long term affects.

Mary plans to focus on her family and getting well.

Let us keep Mary and the Smith family in our daily prayers. Your generous tip will help cover their medical bills. Thank you and God bless!
